Old Guard Has a Problem

Why The Old Guard Has A Problem With Passing The Torch #144

Rites of passage

One of the problems with progression is when the elders decide to hold trade secrets and refuse to pass along that knowledge to the younger ones to continue their message in their way. In many cultures, it was always tradition to pass the torch. Whether it was through ceremonies through an aging process or the rites of passage a mother has with a daughter teaching them old recipes, there was always knowledge being shared. It seems in today’s world, that rarely exists when it comes to moving forward.

The Bernie Problem

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders

For instance, many always crack on Millennials, those born between 1981 and 1997 saying they’re whiny babies who are protected by privilege. Sure, some of that may be true depending on who you talk to but how did they get that way? It wasn’t by chance. The older generations refused to share what they know for the newer generations to avoid those pitfalls. We have superstars in the political spectrum such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar who have broken barriers to get into the United States Congress. Like them, many were inspired by old guard senior, Bernie Sanders when he ran for president against Hillary Clinton in 2016. Bernie was a lightning rod who sparked the conversations needed for a newer generation and it paid off in the election which brought on a very diverse Congress.

However, Bernie refuses to leave! He still wants that spotlight for himself and won’t allow his teachings and tutelage to allow new blood in that arena. He plans on putting on his own rebuttal to Trump’s State of the Union despite the official Democratic response is by former Georgia gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams. Bernie has a problem with passing the torch as he plans for another presidential race. Why?

Congress needs new blood

Congress is filled with older statesmen with decades of service due to a lack of term limits. Therefore, older people make lawful decisions for younger ones. Before this last election, the average age of Congress was 59 years old. Many in their 70s and 80s. Who are they representing and why won’t they groom the next generation to fill their seats? Let’s chat about passing the torch and why the old guard has issues with it.
