Power doesn’t always mean someone in control does it because they are leaders. Sometimes, they do it because they fear a different result. The United States was built on fear. Europeans feared the Native Americans enough to murder them and send them west. They feared Africans enough to enforce laws to establish them as 3/5th human and property of White people. They feared the Japanese during an invasion enough to imprison them and keep tabs on them during a war. Now, they fear Muslims due to 9/11 and Latinos due to immigration. The fear they have isn’t to keep people out; it’s a fear of losing power through racial identity. A Black and Brown planet is the worst fear of White people. But why?
White Fear Vs. History
If we travel through history and look at the ways where White Americans used their power in numbers to reduce others into groups they can easily control, you’ll find laws which back them. When you control the Congress, Presidency, and Supreme Court, you can control how the world works. You can lynch a 14 year old Black boy (Emmett Till) for whistling and be promised to get off scot-free simply because the power structure is designed by those who look like you. You can put a 14-year old Black boy (George Stinney) in the electric chair for killing two White girls with little to no proof because he was the “obvious” choice due to his skin color.
White America knows it’s atrocities and in the days of Donald Trump, they recognize their shrinking numbers through how many more Spanish-speakers there are, how many Blacks are enjoying life without consequence, how many Muslims are gaining in places of power, and how many people of color are running in political races which can dictate what White people can and can’t do. This is a hard pill to swallow for people who are used to enjoying the luxuries of life with very little fallout.
Moving Forward
Sons and daughters of European conquerors now fight for the Confederate flags and statutes, wear Nazi symbols, shoot church and synagogue members, fight more for guns than human life, and claim they’re in a losing battle of existence. Their fear is driving them to do unspeakable acts and for the first time, are being held accountable by a more diverse group of authoritative figures. They’re fear is people of color will treat them the way they pretended they weren’t treating others. What will happen as history shifts the dynamic?
