When Do Political Attack Ads Cross The Line? #130

Back in the Day

Have you noticed how ridiculous the current campaign attack ads are that are bombarding your television and internet? The baradement of name calling, finger pointing, dirt slinging, digging up tweets and Facebook posts from Christmas past of 2005 has become overwhelming. Can these types of advertisements influcence an election? Has our political system been reduced to a formula of “Be as mean and nasty as ossible so you can win”?

Political attack ads have been around since the early establishment of the United States democratic system. Calling opponents names or dipicting their characterists in a negative fashion have been in the norm in every political cycle. An entire industry dedicated to support canidates and campaigns were created just for this purpose, to push an agenda and influence voters.

The Conversation Has Changed

During the last two presidential elections, a change has occured regarding the “rules” of how to play in the pool of politial attack advertisements. The messaging of lately seems to teater on being discrepectful, distateful, insulting and just plain rude. What chaged? Has the development of social media and 24 hour cable news outlets created a viewer hungry for negative ads? Or will this constant negativity turn off voters?
