Zod & Drea Infinity War Review

Movie Review – Avengers | Infinity War (2018)

So, we were sure to lock down our Avengers: Infinity War tickets the second they went on sale. We didn’t want to risk the crowds so we bought the first tickets smoking and had perfect seats in the middle of the theater, in the middle of the row. Leather, food, drinks… When it comes to Marvel movies, you can’t take the risk. And the 10 year wait (technically, six) was completely worth it.

It’s been a pretty big year for Marvel. With the anticipation and worldwide blowout and deserving success of Black Panther (2017), in February, it led up to the final introduction of the characters needed to help defeat Thanos, the Mad Titan who had purposely been after the Infinity Stones since 2012’s The Avengers. The first post credit in that film showed the face of the universal madman who was hellbent on achieving this task by sending Loki to Earth to defeat any threats to the mission.

Since then, the stones had been featured in Marvel films such as Captain America: The First Avenger (2011),  Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and Doctor Strange (2016). This build up leads to several whereabouts to where in the universe the final stone is located and how Thanos will achieve that goal. And believe me, it’s not just a Disney movie anymore.

The first 10 minutes of Infinity War takes place right after Thor: Ragnarok’s final credit when encountering Thanos’ ship. These 10 minutes show the mercilessness and strength of Thanos as well as his determination to achieve his goal. Those on board are given choices. And (SPOILER), not everybody survives.

What makes this such a thorough film are the relationships of the Avengers throughout the film. They’re not all communicating with each other so there are about three organized battles going on throughout the movie all over the universe. You’d think this chaotic considering one character is what connects them all but the Russo Brothers did an incredible time telling the story and making sense of it. Old connections are explained and many are killed throughout the film.  Considering it’s 149 minutes (2 hours, 29 minutes), you’ll have time to collect your thoughts before the next action adventure puts you on the edge of your seats.

Nobody is safe in this film and all of your favorites show up. I’m only disappointed because I’d like to see more of my favorite character but I’m hoping Avengers Part 4 (Infinity War Part 2) will take care of that. But the evolution of so many characters from their last movies (many hadn’t seen each other in 2 years), shows the depth of these powered individuals. Despite the time needed from each other or Tony’s PTSD from New York, Wanda and Vision’s growing love for each other, Bucky and Rhodie’s mental and physical recovery, Steve’s darker side as Captain America, Dr. Strange’s acceptance as a wizard master and how Tony irks him…you see them all so differently than how they were first introduced. Just like the comics.

Thanos even becomes a much more complicated individual and Josh Brolin brings it out. The CGI was phenomenal and the storyline would be almost impossible to merge so many characters in at least three different places in the universe but they do it! As a comic-book admirer and movie lover, you couldn’t ask for much more than this film. It took 10 years of our lives…an entire decade and I can say without a doubt, this is the BEST Marvel movie made. Individual story will always go to Black Panther considering it’s emotional connection with pride as it’s backdrop. But this has a 10-year emotional connection due to you practically growing up with so many characters in 19 Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

The ending of this film is also different. Instead of the colorful graphics revealing the actor’s names with stunning precision, this film simply has plain black and white text. There is no middle credit. But there is an ending credit which reveals the next character. Some will recognize it and some won’t. But that’s how Marvel plays it’s games…like who dies and who doesn’t.  I won’t reveal who dies in this film but Marvel didn’t waste any time letting people know why Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet is so dangerous and a threat to the entire universe. We’re hoping the Time Stone will reverse some of the damage for nostalgia’s sake. But for now, it’ll be a rough year until May 9th, 2019 when the conclusion to this story comes out. Get your tickets ready!!
