Movie Review: The Foreigner (2017)

Jackie Chan is BACK! I’m not sure if the action star had gone anywhere but I know that after seeing “The Foreigner”, I missed him and didn’t even know it. There’s nothing like seeing a movie with an older, grizzled character who suddenly pops up all spry and kicks a ton of ass on-screen! And when that star is Jackie Chan, it’s just a special kind of special to me! So, let’s get into it…

Jackie plays a father named Quan who is a nationalized British citizen moved from China with his daughter fan. The film gets right into it with this older father looking after his daughter closely and lovingly as he picks her up from high school to get a dress for a dance coming up. Slightly over-protective, he watches her go into a dress shop and fights over a parking spot. As he gets out of the car due to an accident, he’s blown back from a huge explosion that comes out of the dress Fan happened to be shopping in. Due to the blast, he’s disoriented but fights his way to find his only daughter deceased from the blast amongst many others hurt and/or killed. So, if you’ve seen the Taken series with Liam Neeson, you know you don’t mess with a father’s family. Especially one with “a particular set of skills”.

A while after the explosion, with the cuts on his face healing and after burying his daughter, this saddened old “chinaman” (their words, not mine) walks around staring at nothing, walking slowly, and is completely distraught,..understandably. So, he decides to see what he can do about it by calling the police agencies on the case and visiting…almost every day. What loving father wouldn’t? The man he contacts, Bromley, tells him they’re on the case but his visiting takes time away from resources. Seeing a TV news report leads him to Pierce Brosnan’s Liam Hennessey due to him being in the terrorist group that claimed responsibility. Problem is Liam isn’t part of that group anymore 😉 and when he was, it wasn’t about murder. This group has co-oped the name or is of a different faction than what he was a part of back in the day. Behind closed doors, though Liam knows more than he’s telling and this determined father now has a plan to get the names of everybody who may be involved.

What starts out as a slow start soon begins unraveling as a man on a mission who is ex-military with…… “a particular set of skills” to get what he wants. There’s intrigue, mystery, action, and a whole lot of Pierce Bronson saying “JESUS CHRIST!” in an Irish accent! Check it out for a great amount of fun despite the poor dad losing his kid. But man…when Jackie Chan wants answers, just give the man some answers! You’ll save on your medical expenses.
