I’ve been a fan of the Underworld series since the first installment in 2003. The story of vampires verses werewolves has been around since the silent movie era and earlier through eastern european fables. I immediately became a fan of the heroine, Selene played by Kate Beckinsale. Selene is a vampire who works and is a feared Death Dealer killing Lycans ( aka werewolves ) that allegedly killed her entire family. The series reveal the truth behind the death of her family, challenges her loyalty to the coven she swore to protect, develops a relationship with a Lycan which results in a child that is half vampire and half Lycan. Except for the third installment, The Rise of the Lycans a prequel to the series chronicling the beginning of the war between the two sworn enemies, the other movies continued to build on the struggles of our hero Selene to find peace and her daughter.
Underworld: Blood Lines starts with the usual fierce fighting the fans expect from Selene. She is not only being hunted by the Lycans but now the vampires as well for murdering a coven elder. Selena sent her daughter into hiding so the coven nor Selene can find her while protecting her daughter’s precious blood that is sought out by both creatures. After the opening battle, Selene is informed that Semira, a council member of the Eastern Coven, wishes for Selene to be granted clemency so that she can train the Eastern Coven fighters to the level of Death Dealer. Selene is brought back to the coven and is befriended by David who was caught in a battle between Semira, his coven leader, and Semira’s right hand man and lover, Varga, David learned that Semira’s plan was to capture Selene, frame her for the slaughter of the coven members and drain Selene of her blood to gain ultimate power. Selene and David survive the battle and seek refuge with the Nordic Coven.
The Nordic Coven is this super cool, mystical vampire coven that resemble the Elves from the Lord of the Rings. A kind of vampire version of Orlando Bloom. While hiding out with the Nordic’s, Selene learns their rituals of connecting to the in between worlds of life and death. David learns from the Nordic elders that he is a descendant of the High Elder Amelia, which makes David the heir to the Eastern Coven. During this time the Lycans lead by Marius, is searching for Selene so he can learn of her daughter’s location and attack the Nordic Coven. During the awesome battle, Marius tries to get Selene to reveal her daughters location. She does not know and once he is finally convinced that Selene is speaking the truth, she drowns in the freezing water submitting to her death. Marius and the Lycans retreat and David returns the Eastern Coven.
Once David arrives to the Eastern Coven, he claims he is the heir and not Selene. Proving his case, David delivers rings that contain his mother’s blood for the Higher Elders to provide the truth about David’s lineage. Semira’s betrayals and lies are revealed and she is arrested. At that moment the Marius and the Lycans attack the Eastern Coven driven on eliminating the entire coven. While the battle of supreme beast forges on and the vampire coven starts to dwindle, Selene presents herself. She is reborn as a Nordic with new powers and is more of a bad ass. While Marius and Selene fight the ultimate battle, his blood lands on her mouth and she intakes it and sees that he was the one that killed her beloved Michael aka Baby Daddy. Now it is on! In a moment that I can only label as a “Mortal Combat” moment, Selene kills Marius by ripping out his spine. David shows Marius’s severed head and the battle ends and the Lycans retreat. The coven survives the battle and Selene is made a High Elder. All is calm for now in Selene’s world and her daughter’s whereabouts are still unknown…for now.
