Movie Review: Alien: Covenant (2017)

Does the world need another Alien movie? For die-hard fans like myself…YES!!! Prometheus left me and other fans with so many questions. Did Dr. Shaw and David find the Engineers? Did they meet the creators of the Engineers? And who created those creators? The curiosity has been building up since 2012 and fans can get one step closer to answering our burning questions!

The story begins with the ship,Covenant, and its crew years after the Prometheus expedition. The Covenant crew consists two thousand members and one thousand human embryos. The sole purpose of the expedition is to colonize the remote planet, Origae-6. The main crew members are Walter (Michael Fassbender), Daniels (Katherine Waterston), Oram (Billy Crudup), Tennessee (Danny McBride) Karine Oram (Carmen Ejogo) and Lope (Demián Bichir). The team is in deep hibernation sleep planned for 71/2 years while traveling to Origae-6. While en route to its destination, the ship is impacted by a rare neutrino burst which cases major damages to the ship and forces the crew to wake up 6 years before schedule. While repairing the damage to the ship, the crew receives a human like communication and trace it to an unknown planet that reports to have a human friendly atmosphere and environment supportive of colonizing, The crew’s captain, Oram, makes the decisions to redirect the ships route track down this strange message to the unknown planet and find out if a human is living on the planet and is in need of help.

Now, we already know from following the other Alien installments that visiting this “unknown” planet will not end well, but we still follow along hoping they find an amusement park filled with happy humans. When the crew lands on the planet they find lush forests, wheat field, rivers but no animals. One portion of the crew inspects a structure that was the former Engineer ship. Two large skeletal forms of the Engineers greet the guests and as they are looking around the area, Daniels finds the ID tag of Elizabeth Shaw. As they continue inspecting the planet they come across an unseen predator in the form of microbes that have been sitting dormant in the vegetation on the ground. Two crew members are infected with the microbes and quickly the situation becomes dire.

Quickly, the infected crew member’s health deteriorate. Suddenly Neomorph (new kind of alien form) bursts out of their bodies. One is killed along with a crew member while on the ship in the enclosed medical room and the other alien runs loose in the wheat field and suddenly more Neomorph come out of the field and attack the ground crew. Abruptly the aliens are stopped and scatter away when a hooded man shows up with this super-duper flare gun to save the crew from being attacked. The hooded man reveals himself and he is David, the android from the Prometheus crew. David gives a tour for the ground crew of the area and tells the crew that Dr. Shaw did not survive. David meets his brother android, Walter and soon the true story of what has been going on the past ten years since Prometheus came to this unknown planet. Fights start, infestation takes place and we are soon introduced to an Xenomorph, the upgraded version of the alien experiment. An epic battle for survival of human life and android take place and more pieces of the mystery on how this story connects to the original Alien story are revealed.

Alien; Covenant is an exciting science fiction thriller that offers a level of suspense where you want to close your eyes because you know what will happen but you want to see this fascinating alien creature in all it’s blood thirsty glory. I was a fan of the first two movies (you suck Aliens Resurrections!) and what drew my interest was the story of a strong, female lead that is this arch-enemy of the alien, the crazy intense suspend and I admire the work of H.R. Giger and his morbidity, beautiful painting Necronom IV which inspired the conceptual image for the Alien. Once Prometheus was released, my fandom reached a new level. The theme of “who created us” and “who created our creator” has been the unanswered questions for humans since we developed a conscious. That question is what drives these characters to risk their lives and their sanity to know. The question I have is…what will you do once the answer is revealed? Playing with the ideas of humans were engineered by space beings and living in a galaxy filled with other versions of us is a playground I will continue to show up for.
