School to Prison Pipeline - Martin Perez -Zod & Drea

Discussion About The School-To-Prison Pipeline #093

On this podcast, we welcome Martín Peréz, Jr., Vice-President of Academie del Pueblo in Phoenix, AZ to discuss the school-to-prison pipeline. We sat down and engaged in a deep conversation regarding the role of parents, teachers, school resource officers, and private prisons in what seems to be a large national problem in profiting from prisoners from a young age. Statistics of school suspensions are cited from the Demand2Learn website and the results are staggering on how much more affected they are in Black and Brown communities as well as the disabled. Take a look at the video and listen to the podcast where Martín breaks it down. Who knows? Maybe the next chapter is to discuss the 13th Amendment and the for-profit prison system as it’s all connected.

Arizona will even feature a series of four from the Living United for Change in Arizona (LUCHA) organization about “Freedom Through Food” where one is based on the School-To-Prison Pipeline. Mr. Peréz is an educator who has worked in California and Arizona.  He expresses the dangerous policies set in motion for children starting as young as kindergarten and how it differs from mostly White institutions.
